When BTS travel for concerts, promotions, filming, etc, the Run BTS producers only see one thing: downtime for content! Thus here we are in another “hotel room” duology, where BTS sit on the floor and play whatever games the staff devise. These types of episodes are definitely not my favorite, but in this one they come up with some silly and fun games, so I appreciate that they’re doing their damnedest to make what they can with what they have.
Setup:
Sitting on the dirtiest hotel floor they’ve ever sat on (moving the sofa to give them filming space revealed the depths to which the visible carpet had sunk), BTS will divide into three teams and play various torture activities, or games, to decide who will win. This episode is prizes for the winner instead of punishment for the loser. Let’s hope they’ve booked most of the floor because decibel levels are high!
The Moments of Pure Love:
Taehyung suggests, very seriously, that perhaps they’re playing hide and seek today
Hoseok wonders if the hotel actually has an activity for them to do: it does not
Hoseok is interested in trying this “reward” thing for once, but he allows that if it doesn’t work they’ll go back to a punishment structure
The producers have decided instead of pieces of paper they will decide teams with muk-jji-bba, which immediately throws a wrench into the entire operation
Muk-jji-bba is like RPS except that the people who throw the same symbol are teamed up together
There is also a song, but no one can agree at which point in the song you’re supposed to throw your shape
Jimin, infinitely wise, is like let’s just say RPS but not do RPS
Their first throw results in everyone but Jimin throwing scissors
The second throw, amazingly, gets the 2-2-3 split they’re looking for with Jimin and Taehyung (scissors), Namjoon and Jin (paper), and Hoseok, Yoongi, and Jungkook (rock)
Hoseok is very excited about this fresh grouping even though this is the exact same as the cooking episode with Jungkook and Namjoon swapped
Naming begins
Jungkook suggests GJB for Good Job Bro, but Hoseok doesn’t like it
Yoongi throws out Muk
Jimin realizes that makes them Jji, with Namjin as Bba
Everyone seems okay with this
Yoongi, a demon in a beanie, is like wait we could claim Kim Seokjin Team
The irony of not having Jin on their team plus Jin’s annoyance at this sways Jungkook and Hoseok
Taehyung and Jimin, seeing their shot, become Team Kim Seokjin
Namjoon wants to stick with Bba
Taehyung suggests Jin Team to them, but they say no because it sounds like losing team
This prompts Taehyung to go back to Jji
Yoongi, Hoseok, and Jungkook are steadfast as Kim Seokjin Team
Jin is sooooo irritated that Jungkook claps with happiness
The first game is Can You Hear My Song, where the audio team has mixed BTS songs with random sounds in a Phillip Glassian-style sonic hellscape and they have to guess what the song is
The first song sounds like BTS if they were being dropped inside of a paper shredder; Jin guesses Dope, incorrectly
Everyone realizes this is essentially a game of persistence so they guess their entire catalogue, incorrectly
The staff plays it again, and lets us try to guess along, and this is one of those things that once you know what it is you can hear it but I, at least, never got any of them right
BTS is similarly puzzled, and they stare at each other
Namjoon continues to guess their discography as he thinks of it
Jimin suddenly sings “you can’t stop me lovin’ myself” from Idol to himself, unwisely, because before he can raise his hand Jin swoops in and steals the idea from him
The production team, smelling the sweet smell of a wild guess, asks Jin to say which part it is; he has no idea
Taehyung, catching on, realizes that he should just guess various parts of the song until he gets it
Namjoon breaks in with the complaint that the speaker is closer to Kim Seokjin rather than in the middle, so they have an advantage
Jin tries to guess Idol again, and the producers are like yes we said that’s right, and Jin complains that they said they only had to guess the name of the song; the producers are unmoved
Jin tries to guess a part, and guesses the same part Taehyung did, which makes Namjoon smile so big
Jimin tries to describe the moment in the song, after the bridge into the next chorus, and the staff are flummoxed and try to ask a clarifying question
Everyone starts shouting over everyone else, especially Jin, who holds his hands out in front of him like Hadoken and shouts his team name until everyone shuts up; he gets it wrong
The staff offer to move on to an easier version of it, which everyone refuses
Jin tries to take a turn answering but says Jji (Vmin’s team name) instead of Bba (his team name) possibly because of his own name
Jungkook loves this confusion and claps again
More guesses come in, complete with choreography, and the staff drop a hint that the chorus is the right location but no one can get it
Jungkook raises his hand and does “Hoo Hoo!” at a very high pitch, grinning hugely
The staff play the easier version; it is not easier
The staff give a hint of the first syllable, Deong, and Taehyung hand raises so quickly it scorches the air around him as he guesses the drum rumble part correctly
The staff play the song clip as proof, and Namjoon is like “wow, I can suddenly hear it so clearly now!!!!” and Hoseok has to break it to him that it’s because he heard the song itself
Namjoon feels shame for himself and his entire line
Hoseok is annoyed that they didn’t think of this part, which is the highlight of the song
Jungkook wishes to be a time traveler, and enacts going back in time in his time machine and answering the question correctly
The second question sounds like if BTS were inside of a music box going through a tumble dryer
Jin says the wrong team name again, very confidently, and guesses Fake Love
He corrects himself too late, and Jungkook swoops in and also guesses Fake Love, singing the correct part, and gets it right
Namjoon scolds Jin forcefully for getting the wrong name, then tells him that his name is Kim Seokbba for the rest of his life
Jimin has crossed both of his legs up under his hoodie like it’s a dress for comfort, and I’m taken suddenly back in time to high school, and I have to take a second to recover
The third question sounds like BTS if they became a death metal band
Jin once again guesses first, with the correct team name but the wrong song in Not Today
They’re all even more confused than before, and the producers start introducing a long pause before they tell them they’re wrong
Hoseok says that the director’s acting is improving
Namjoon says his heart is pounding due to the tension
Jungkook shakes his finger at the director to remonstrate this pain he’s putting him through
Taehyung keeps raising his hand as if he’s going to answer then puts it down as soon as no one else has a guess, and the staff and Jimin find him terrifically cute
They play an easier version, and Namjoon, Jimin, and Jungkook lay on the floor with their heads closer to the speaker to really catch all the nuances
It doesn’t help at all
The staff give them a hint that it’s a part 2 song
Jungkook guesses Airplane Pt 2 but has absolutely zero idea what part of the song it is
Jin determinedly guesses, but can’t remember a single part of the song except for El Mariachi
Hoseok screams his excitement to guess, getting the “you’re a singing star” part correct, and he’s the happiest he’s ever been
Jungkook says he hears it now that he knows what it is, and asks the staff to play the hardest one again just to prove it
Jimin, absolutely at his limit, is in disbelief that any of them can hear anything at all because it’s just noise
Yoongi agrees, he still doesn’t hear anything
Jin slaps Namjoon on the arm and says they should have picked Kim Seokjin Team
Jimin asks them to play the song itself, which they do, then turns to Taehyung
Taehyung, with a look on his face like a man considering why the planets spin, is like “this is my part…”
They start with the 4th question (out of 10, they clarify), and it sounds like BTS if they used hairdryers instead of microphones
This one is, in my opinion, the clearest yet, and Hoseok smiles and says it’s easy as he raises his hand to answer
Taehyung, suddenly animated, tries to answer, flailing forward onto his hands and pleading for recognition
Hoseok was first, and Jungkook takes that as their whole team is first, and guesses Truth Untold
Hoseok disagrees with this guess, but Yoongi is into it
Yoonkook do a little duet of “but I still want you”, which is correct
Taehyung, the whole time, is trying to get Jji Team acknowledged to no avail
Hosoek is like fuck me, you guys are good at this!
Jin announces that he thought it was Begin
Jimin sneezes twice, and given his energoid level and his hoodie I think he might have been a little sick during this one
Hoseok realizes they’re in the lead and wonders if they should set up some penalties
The fifth question sounds like if BTS were falling down an elevator in a space mine
Jimin begins to believe that this is all an elaborate hoax being perpetrated on him specifically
Jin tries to ring in by yelling his own name before being corrected to Bba again, then guesses “don’t worry love” from DNA, and while the song is correct the line is not
Namjin clasp their hands together and scream in each other’s faces with joy at this incredible song guess
Yoonmin are pretty impressed with them
Jungkook chimes in with the deep DNA from that song and gets it right
Namjin are brought low in moments, hanging their head in defeated shame
Hoseok thanks them for the assist
Jin takes another moment to remind Namjoon that they should have picked Team Kim Seokjin
Yoonkook take their own moment to lightly mock Jin for not saying the right team name
The sixth question is hard to hear because Jimin is talking but it sounds like BTS if they were in the middle of a drumline competition
Jin once again yells out the wrong team name, his hand pushed out in front of him like he’s casting a spell
Jimin laughs reaches all the way across Taehyung to slap Jin with delight
Taehyung, who has answered in the chaos of Jin trying to correct himself, says “so show me” from Magic Shop, correctly
Jimin’s face changes from mocking laughter to amazed pride in an instant
Jimin announces that he thought it was Idol
Namjin are busy falling into each other with laughter and can’t appreciate the guess
Jimin asks for the clip again and he and Jungkook can suddenly hear it like magic
Jimin gives Taehyung a hug
Hoseok tells Taehyung that he’s amazing
The seventh question sounds like BTS if they were performing inside of an active construction site
Namjoon, Taehyung, and Jimin all lay down to hear better
Yoongi complains, and Jimin moves like he’s going to sit back up but he doesn’t
Hoseok says it’s Namjoon’s part
Taehyung immediately guesses Yoongi’s “I’ll forgive you” from Fire, correctly
Hoseok is truly impressed by this wizardry, not knowing that Taehyung has a special hearing organ for rapline saying things sexily
A quick scoring recap reveals that Kim Seokjin Team has 7, Jji has 5, and Bba has 0 points (points are determined by the difficulty)
The eighth question sounds like if BTS were performing inside the hose of a vacuum cleaner
Jimin leans forward very slightly to hear better
Taehyung, who has figured out that the trick to this game is completely ignoring the loud machine sounds and listening to the quiet stuff underneath, again raises his hand instantly and sings a part from Save Me, correctly
Jin tries to argue that Taehyung said Jjin instead of Jji when calling his tame name
Taehyung’s pouting expression could break your heart as he says that he said Jji; he’s wearing a red snapback backwards and looks truly young and pathetic
They give Taehyung the point
Yoongi calls him a genius as Jimin hugs him again
Jimin says that everything sounds the same to him, and he really doesn’t get it
They ask for a replay, and suddenly everyone can hear the ‘save me save me’ part
The ninth question sounds like BTS if they were putting a new roof on your house
They agree to all sit in their normal far away seats, but Jimin gets up on his feet in a crouch so he can lean forward like a bird of prey
They’re once again puzzled, including Taehyung
Jungkook eventually raises his hand and guesses “cause we got fire” from Dope; the song is correct but the part is not
Namjoon guesses a random part from Dope, but is wrong
Jin guesses a random part from Dope, and isn’t exactly right but he’s close enough they let him refine it into a win
Namjin once again hold hands in victory, screaming aloud
Jungkook can do nothing but clap happily at his ridiculous hyungs
As it’s 2, 7, 7, the team decides to make the last question worth 5 points in the hopes that Namjin can catch up
Jungkook is drawn in by the mystic 7 and wants to give it to Jin to make sure that happens
The tenth question sounds like BTS if they were radioing in from the bottom of the ocean
Jin screams his own name to answer and Namjoon tries to gently remind him that it’s Bba
The rest of them, at this point, can do nothing but laugh in resignation at this man
Jin guesses Danger, and one staff asks him to sing which part while another says wrong
Taehyung perks up and asks if it was Danger, which it wasn’t, they just wanted to make Jin sing something
Jikook love this prank
They all guess some more, stumped, including Yoongi who gets very excited when he thinks it’s Boy In Luv: it’s not
They listen to it over and over again, eventually just discussing what they’re hearing among themselves because they have no idea
Jin suggests it might be Doraemon
Hoseok eventually guesses Boyz with Fun, which is right, but his absolutely gutted that he can’t remember a single part of the song
Yoongi takes a shot in the dark, and is wrong
Jin chimes in with the right part, securing the 7-7-7 tie and once again clinging to Namjoon’s hands like it’s the end of the Titanic
The second game is Sing in Korean, which all of them agree they will be incredible at as Koreans
However, the real game is to take BTS songs and translate the English words in them to Korean as best as possible, and now everyone is scared except for Jin who is excited to have Namjoon on his team
The producers give an example of changing “DNA” to the Korean scientific term for it, and Jimin nearly chokes on his presumably throat-soothing iced coffee with laughter
Sope agree to simply stay silent as Namjoon answers all the questions to avoid reputational loss
The first question part of the second verse from Idol, starting with Yoongi and going all the way through Taekook’s parts
Everyone is dumbfound at how long it is, but Hoseok takes a shot after clarifying that he has to sing it
Jungkook has also procured some kind of coffee, as has Taehyung, so between games they must have had some kind of refreshment delivery
A problem quickly emerges when the parts are so long that Hoseok can’t remember the original lyrics, much less translate them into Korean
Jungkook and Yoongi offer assists on their parts and gets him most of the way through it, but not perfect
Everyone else has this realization dawn on them too, including Namjoon, who wouldn’t know a vocal line verse if it walked up and slapped him in the face
Taehyung whisper-sings to himself with his hand raised in the air, ready to go; Jimin bounces next to him gleefully, falling into his shoulder over and over
Eventually Taehyung thinks he’s got it and says “It’s me!”, which Hoseok finds so cute that he falls all the way into Jungkook’s lap about it
Taehyung makes a spirited attempt but is tripped up by “dance” and Yoongi yelling at him for not singing it in the right rhythm and tune
Yoongi decides to step up to the mic and sits up on his knees to go hard and succeeds
No one noticed until later that “fans” is a borrowed word in Jungkook’s part that wasn’t changed, so Yoongi sits back smugly like it was no big deal
Jin scolds Namjoon for not even trying when he is the most equipped to do this
Namjoon apologizes and realizes he needs to take an active part
The next question is Mic Drop, starting from when Yoongi asks us to sue them going through the first chorus part to “how you dare”
Taehyung holds his hand up the whole time, waving it like he’s about to answer as soon as the song stops, but it goes on so long that he eventually drops it, defeated
Jin also yells their team name before the song ends, but is flummoxed at how long it is
They all sit back and try to remember the chorus (which the producers say they can start with)
Yoongi says “Did. You. See. My. Bag” and it’s very cute
Namjoon eventually feels like he has solved it, and he gets a big smile on his face as Jin approves of him
He is nearly immediately tripped up by “trophies”
Taehyung comes in, and Vmin both do the dance as he makes it through the first part without issue
He then sings “I’m so” and puts his hand over his mouth in shock; Jimin shoves him over
Namjoon points out that “Am-so” in Korean is cow, then moos loudly
Hoseok takes a turn and cranks up the cuteness and his pitch as he gestures his way through but gets a bit turned around by how to translate “How you dare” and goes with something like “How about it” which causes some debate
Jin sing-screams Bbaaaaaaaaaaaaa to get them to shut up, takes a turn, and forgets what the lyrics are after two lines
Hilariously, the editing team playing the song behind him slows it down and makes it distorted like a jukebox running out of power
Jungkook is on his knees, head bowed to the floor, eyes closed, and is dancing his way through the chorus as he mouths lyrics to himself
Taehyung decides to try the direct approach and asks Namjoon how to translate “How you dare” into Korean; Namjoon refuses but Jinmin are delighted by his boldness
Hoseok complains that Namjoon has a huge advantage in this game
Namjoon goes in and nails it, but the room is not proud of him because they’re annoyed
Jungkook says this game is way too hard!
The third quest is Not Today, Namjoon’s verse
Namjoon is absolutely entranced to realize he’s going to have to translate his play on words with “extra” and “ordinary” into Korean
Yoongi can’t believe they’re making them translate a Namjoon verse
Jimin asks Taehyung what “extra” is in Korean, and Taejin answer confidently that it’s supporting actors who appear for a very short time, which is not wrong! But also not right
When they get to the “Baby, yes I want it” line, Jungkook says “Baby!” in Korean, very high-pitched
Hoseok says that last part is the only part he knows in the entire verse
Yoongi decides that it’s going to be his time to shine and he comes in hot saying “part” without translating it
Yoongi says he can’t do it and throws the responsibility to Koobi
Hoseok decides YOLO and goes for it, doing as many cool person hand gestures as he possibly can as Namjoon watches him with fondness in his eyes and heart
Namjoon says that he did it right, and the staff say that Hoseok didn’t say Kim Seokjin Team first so it doesn’t count
Taehyung sees his chance and rises up to take a shot; he translates extras as movie extras and Namjoon falls to the floor in laughter
He gets it, with a whispered assisted from Jimin, except he skips the word “plus”
Yoongi, serious as a heart attack, rises up to take on this final challenge
Hoseok, smiling, says that Namjoon is taking it easy on them
Namjoon says this is a hard verse to translate
Yoongi translates it somberly, like it’s a poetry competition and he’s trying to take home first prize
He gets it right, much to everyone’s relief
Jimin, sort of annoyed, is like I didn’t come to work to come to an English class today
Hoseok, sort of startled, realizes that for the first time he knows what their song is about, and only Namjoon was aware before
Jin asks if they’ve thought about him recently, and how he’s on a team with someone who’s so nice that even though he knew the answer immediately he wouldn’t answer to give them a shot
The next question is Best Of Me, starting with the beginning
Everyone instantly begins asking their vocalists what the lyrics actually are
Jimin, who is one of the vocalists, thinks he can do this one, but he translates “When you say that you love me” to “When will you say you love me?” and again causes hysterical laughter from Namjoon
Yoongi screams and screams and screams because he says he knows all the lyrics and can translate them
Everyone sort of talks over each because Jimin’s not aware of why he mistranslated and Taehyung thinks it should be his turn, but Yoongi soldiers ahead until he says “When you” and loses it
Jin takes his shot and does a great job at translating until he literally forgets the lyrics in the middle again and curses his lack of long term memory
Jimin, who has now realized what the translation of the first line should have been, wants to go, but it has to be Taehyung according to the rules of the game where another member has to alternate in
Jungkook picks up the rock and comes in with an angelic voice to hit the translations; Hoseok backs him up with adlibs in case it helps
Namjoon explains to Jimin why “When you say that you love me” is not a question even though it starts with when, and Jimin doesn’t really care but he smiles at him anyway
Hoseok makes up a little song for RM’s English class
The next one is Dope, starting from Taehyung’s part in the pre-chorus
Everyone is flummoxed by the word “club” which doesn’t really have a Korean equivalent, sort of like if we tried to translate karaoke into English
Jin takes a stab at it and says “party”, taking a few seconds for that to register as an English word but once it does he thinks it’s hilarious
Taehyung tries “a place where many people hang out” for club but he’s rejected
Yoongi goes with “ballroom”, which sounds silly but is accepted, but he’s tripped up by the “yes” in “I don’t wanna say yes”
Jin asks if it’s okay for the person next to the guesser to feed them lyrics, and the production staff says it’s fine for the Korean parts since that’s not the test here
Namjoon comes in hot with his flawless translations but forgets that the word “higher” comes after “fire” and says fire twice, which makes Yoongi gesticulate wildly into the room like he’s directing airplanes
Jimin takes his chance but has to be fed English lyrics from Taehyung and Jin is NOT having it
Hoseok steps up to the plate and performs an impassioned and wordy pre-chorus, dancing to his own feelings, and he feels like he got it
Namjoon calls foul on “But we’ve got fire” when it’s “‘Cause we got fire”, and the staff huddles up to consult before deciding to accept it
Namjoon then asks Hoseok to repeat the last line and accepts it, sadly
Hoseok says he doesn’t feel great about what he’s done but he feels it was correct
Everyone ruminates on how much English they have in their songs, all without ever realizing it
Yoongi, possessed by a spirit within, does a little dance, and we’re out!
The Finish Line:
This was an intense series of games, but I liked them because I understood them and could even play along, at least a little! The songs with noise on top was a good “stuck in a hotel room” sort of game, even if they were all super super difficult, and I liked how Taehyung got to use his BTS and memorization superpowers to nail a bunch of them and impress everyone in the room. Taehyung should always be allowed to impress everyone in the room!
The English game was quite mean, especially given the loan words, and Namjoon definitely took his foot off the gas a little to avoid looking like an asshole, which is very him. I’m not exactly sure where they were and what they were doing at this moment but I think this started the period of time where he was doing English interviews and promo constantly, so I’m sure he was at the peak of his translation craft and could have basically dominated them.
Jin may be chagrined that he didn’t, as Namjin once again shared some incomparable chemistry in all directions in this one, but Namjoon is a good leader and a very non-competitive person outside of the rap scene, so it was nice to watch him be diplomatic in action. Next episode will wind up the series, so see you there!
