It’s a truth universally known that every variety show must be in want of a clip show, and this is what we’re getting here! In the run up to their 50th episode they’re looking back on the previous 48 both because it’s a fun time and because there’s still a lot of footage that never made it to air. We ought to be quite good at rewatching things, so this episode goes out to us.
Little did they know there would be many many many MANY more episodes to come after this…
Setup:
Dressed in tuxedos like an award show, MC Yoongi will lead them all through past Run BTS episodes in his favorite way, which is running through the episodes with the best stats so the editors can show us clips. There’s also a montage and some made up awards, so everyone gets something they like!
The Moments of Pure Love:
Yoongi is wearing a pink bowtie and thick framed glasses as he opens the show by himself, and I’m already at my limit
Yoongi is a bit irritated that they’re doing a 50th anniversary episode, because 50 is not that exciting of a number
The rest of the members, preparing to walk the red carpet, begin marching their patent leather shoes in disquieting rhythm
Everyone has a different bowtie color, making them look very slightly like an acapella group ready for their first performance, and in case you need to know
Jimin - blue
Taehyung - red
Namjoon - purple
Jungkook - yellow
Jin - orange
Hoseok - green
It’s also important to note that the setup for this is Yoongi sitting on a huge chair flanked by two couches; they sit, from left to right, Jimin, Taehyung, Namjoon, Yoongi, Jungkook, Jin, Hoseok, and there are three coffee tables in front of them, some with food
Hoseok is put out that there’s no camera flashes waiting to blind them
The production staff tries to simulate this
Yoongi instructs them to look right first, then left, then front
Everyone except Taejoon participate in this pantomime, Taehyung because he is getting food and Namjoon because I think he’s worried he knocked a pillow off of the couch
Jungkook is also already eating food but he smiles for the cameras anyway
Jimin tries to remember what the first episode was, and they all agree that it’s an episode in a gymnasium where Namjoon had a tissue he threw in the air
This is not episode 1
Yoongi is trying to keep this puppy moving at a steady clip and basically interrupts everything they say to read from the cue cards
All of the ceramics from their pottery class are displayed on a table in front of Yoongi like some sort of crazed flea market display
Hoseok picks up a deformed pitcher and laughs like a hyena (as he does it he very cutely says “Check ‘em out” in English which really got me)
Jin notes that it looks like a squirrel
Taehyung says that he made this, a kettle version of the squirrel trapped in the garden decoration from their first cooking episode
Jungkook picks up a little bowl and admires it
Jimin says, from across the room, that it was his and he made the best one
Hoseok, sincerely, says that it’s great
Namjoon picks up a bowl that has ragged edges like a fried egg and asks who is responsible for this travesty
Yoongi grabs it and says he did it, and actually it looks awesome thank you?
Jimin swoops in and picks up the rose that he made and says actually this is the best one, which is still his
Namjoon is very taken with it and its skill
Jimin is pleased
Yoongi swoops in again to keep things moving, but only Namjoon is listening to him because the rest of them are eating
Yoongi begs them to stop eating so they can do their job of clip montaging and reminiscing about their variety show
They show a montage of everyone eating without a care in the world
Namjoon echoes Yoongi’s instruction, please tell us how you feel
Taehyung echoes Namjoon’s echo of Yoongi’s instruction
Jimin takes pity on Yoongi and actually talks about how he likes that Run BTS lets him do all of these weird insane things like being chased by zombies
Everyone is still chewing like cattle as he speaks, but they nod agreement
Jungkook grabs the fork that Jin is holding, donut hole half-eaten, and guides the fork into his own mouth to take the rest
Hoseok says that they were able to learn a lot during Run BTS
Yoongi, sensing content, is like “tell me everything you learned, now”
Hoseok, who would never say something like that without an itemized list in his head, says that he learned better variety show skills
His demonstration of this is standing up and shaking his ass rhythmically in Jin’s face
Yoongi is like, let’s just move onto the toast
During the toast, Jimin and Taehyung end up switching places because Taehyung feels compelled to walk over to Jin on the other side of the line to clink glasses
They move on to running down the top 5 viewed Run BTS episodes, and Yoongi’s excitement is palpable
Jungkook leans over Yoongi to stab a piece of chicken from the other coffee table
Taehyung realizes that older episodes will have more views than recent episodes, because of how time works
Yoongi says that isn’t true, because they and the show are more popular now
Jungkook stabs a pastry from the coffee table in front of him
Yoongi announces that the 5th most watched is the one where they did the skit in the police station
Bangtan is so surprised by this that Jungkook lowers his fork, pastry not yet finished
Yoongi says that he realized during this episode that they are painfully unfunny comedic sketch artists
Taehyung says that he thought they were in trouble, in the tones of a man who was mentally packing his bags to go back home
Jimin’s takeaway it that BTS should obviously become an acting troupe
Hoseok agrees
Jimin says he meant Jimin, specifically should act
Hoseok disagrees
Jungkook finishes his pastry, but it’s so large he has to chew it like a cow
4th most watched is the first episode of the secret manito / secret Santa duology
Taehyung remembers immediately that it’s the one where Yoonjin were really bad at taking the jumping photos and they all nearly died of laughter, and they’re like “yeah that tracks”
3rd most watched is the first cooking one
Namjoon doesn’t remember the name of the episode (Korean food battle)
Yoongi says “squirrel”
They all agree that this is the best thing they’ve ever done
Yoongi adds that it had 4.8 million views, and the right side couch is flabbergasted
2nd most watched is the school skit with Yoonji
Namjoon remembers Yoonji very vividly
Taehyung, asking the real questions, leans over and demands to know how Yoonji is doing these days
Yoongi says that she’s doing great, eating dinner as they speak
Hoseok, still trying to work through this info, is like “wait are we actually good at skits?”
Namjoon theorizes that we like to see how BTS will inhabit different personas
God love them for not understanding that it’s because we are a bunch of lesbians who think Min Yoonji is super hot and Jungkook smacking Jimin’s ass on camera is also super hot
1st most watched, with 5.3 million views, is the second episode of the old variety game show duology
Yoongi describes it as the kung kung ta episode, and Hoseok laughs his ass off remembering Yoongi’s manic energy
It’s also the one where they had to sing the tomato song, so this all makes a lot of sense
Next are the top 5 episodes by the number of hearts given, but this time Yoongi is going to make them guess because he is a capricious lord
Namjoon theorizes that people will press the hearts more when BTS is being cute or lovely
Hoseok theorizes that people will just press it constantly over and over again
Taehyung confirms that he pushes the heart button from beginning until the end when he watches something on VLive
Jin and Jungkook agree
Namjoon is very sure that Yoonji is the most hearted creature in the entire universe
Jungkook, no longer eating, is like “won’t this just be the same as the most viewed?”
Yoongi does not answer and instead tells them to start guessing
Jimin counters with just guessing number 1, and Yoongi agrees to give them 2-5
5th place is the Kimchi wars, with 170 million hearts
Vmin’s minds are blown by this number
Jungkook, no longer listening, imitates how Yoongi did a puppet show with the potholder and smiles at camera
4th place is the 2nd episode of the secret manito duology, where they were very bad at finding picture differences
They’re surprised but this is the one where Jin wore hanbok so like… yeah
3rd place is Dear My Santa, which is the one with the santa hats and the inflatable pigs and slasher movie villain Jung Hoseok
None of them know what this is
Jin says they filmed it in Sweden, which really confuses everyone, until Taehyung reminds him that’s Bon Voyage
When Yoongi reminds them about the pigs it all comes flooding back
2nd place is the first part of the manito one again
They now have to guess what’s first
Hoseok says Yoonji, obviously
Namjoon agrees that Yoonji shifted something in his heart and mind
Jin is caught in the terror of kung kung ta memories and guesses that
Jimin agrees and guesses 220 million hearts for it
Yoongi confirms that 220 million hearts is correct and Jimin stands up and congratulates himself
Namjoon still thinks Yoonji is the winner
Taehyung goes off book and votes for the police station skit
It is the kung kung ta one, and they’re kind of relieved it’s one they had fun in rather than one where they had to be comedians
Yoongi, inhabiting his old man persona, says that kids these days wouldn’t know about the variety shows they were emulating in that episode, which would trick them into thinking it was a creative idea
VHope sing the Crazy In Love hook to each other
Yoongi throws it to a highlight reel, which is basically what I’ve spent several months typing out but much shorter
To start it they edit together a lot of their “Run BTS!” intros, including a distressing number of their attempts to do a barbershop quartet intro
Eventually they split screen so we can watch the guys eat as they watch the video with us
They find themselves so cute and dumb that it’s nearly unbearable, and here are the best ones
Jimin giggles when Yoongi gets his ATV stuck and has to run for it
Jungkook cackles when Jin has a slow motion scream during the school skit
Yoongi smiles proudly when Jungkook acts at the police station
Hoseok claps when none of them can get their ice sleds to move
Jin loses his shit when he sees the squirrel again
Namjoon falls backwards when Jimin tries to use someone they work with as an answer for kung kung ta
Taehyung laughs so hard his face scrunches up when Yoongi does the hand puppet with the potholder
When the dogs appear they all collectively awwwww
When the zombies appear they all collectively go stone-faced
Jungkook realizes, during this clip montage, that the green tea bag with an M on it from Blue Village was not a real clue
Yoongi comes in to MC after the montage ends with a low, smooth voice that sounds like an NPR announcer
Minimoni crack up, and Yoongi snaps out of it to say that it’s because this is supposed to be a calm moment, dammit
Jin says that they have no faith in Yoongi’s ability to host this
Yoongi asks them if they have any memorable moments
Jin immediately says that he remembers very little of anything they do or why but he will never forget those fucking zombies
Yoongi, staring off into the middle distance, agrees that he also has dark memories of battle
Jimin says that he recently watched the episode where Taejoon went hiking and Jin cooked for them, which is a very Jimin thing to do in his spare time, and he was touched
Namjoon says Jimin won’t go even he asks him
Jimin is like the hell I won’t, of course I will
They high-five to seal the deal
Hoseok remembers indoor games, especially Yoonjin’s failed hand photo
Jungkook, mouth stuffed full of food, interjects with Halli Galli!
Jungkook, still chewing, then says bungee jumping, and as though this has unlocked a blocked memory they’re all like “holy shit we did that didn’t we”
Everyone says it was so scary, shaking their heads in disbelief that they did it
Jungkook is like it was not scary it was in fact the best thing ever
Namjoon says it’s the last time he’s ever doing it
Jungkook says it’s definitely not the last time, because he’s heard things, then looks at the producers meaningfully
His hyungs have a moment of genuine terror as they look around, until it becomes clear that Jungkook is simply trying to speak this into being
He does a little dance about how much he loved plummeting through the air with only a cord to save him
Taehyung remembers the time it snowed at the indoor water park
Yoongi, realizing that time is a’wasting, asks if there’s a theme they want to do
Jimin says he never thinks about what he wants to do but he thinks a lot about how people should be punished
Yoongi stammers as he asks what that means
Jimin gives an example of someone’s voice being changed
Namjoon is like “that is a lot of work for the editors though”
Jin says he wants to do challenges from a show called Infinity Challenge, like racing against a subway
Hoseok says that with Jungkook, anything is possible
Jungkook, chewing, neither agrees nor disagrees
Namjoon begins discussing the feasibility of this as an idea
Taehyung, who has been trying to speak for like a minute straight, finally gets to say that he wants to eat food and read comics at a comic cafe
The rest of them are flummoxed as to how to make that an episode of television
Namjoon reminds him that he can go to a comic book cafe and read on his own time
Taehyung smiles in delight at the idea
Yoongi asks if there’s something they want to do again
Namjoon says he does NOT want bungee jump
Taehyung wants to ride the sleds on the roof again
Taehyung also wants to do the water park
Yoongi asks if there are any behind the scenes events they want to tell us
Taehyung yells out that he has something, right as Yoongi says “something that was edited out”, and Taehyung deflates as he realizes it wasn’t edited out
After encouragement, he announces that he really almost tried to resell the Yoongi acrylic stand that he got in the secret manito episodes
Yoongi says that if he’d done that, he was going to buy them again, and give them back to Taehyung
Jin reveals that Hoseok threw away the huge back of snack mix that he gave him in that same episode
Hoseok raises an objection, and says he gave it out to a bunch of people on sets
Jimin backs him up, as a receiver of the snacks
Jungkook shoves an enormous pastry in his mouth before he can also confirm that he ate a lot of that snack in his life
Jin shakes Jungkook’s hand in gratitude
Yoongi decides it’s time to hand out the awards
2seok spot a trophy on a rotating table and everyone gets unreasonably excited about this since they’ve won some daesangs at this point
Yoongi explains that the members will be handing out the awards to each other, just like famous people hand out the awards at other shows
Namjoon thinks this is the most ridiculous thing he’s ever heard
Yoongi announces that there are seven awards, and Namjoon quickly realizes there are seven Bangtans
Yoongi is like wow what makes you think everyone gets one, this is a fair operation
Category 1 is Talented Boy, presented by Namjoon
Namjoon begins his presentation with “the dictionary defines talent as”
Jungkook tells him that he needs to do more dramatic pausing between his words to sound realistic
Hoseok declares himself a very talented boy
Jin also thinks he is extremely talented and good at showing off those talents to perfection
On that cliffhanger, we are sent into a preview for next week, and we’re out!
The Finish Line:
This episode was much, much funnier than I remembered it, mostly because if you put Jungkook in front of a bunch of food he knows only one way to act. Watching him cut swaths through the various dishes as everyone else conducted the show was really quite something, and I’m proud of him as always.
While it’s clear that they don’t remember a lot of what they do, for obvious reasons that they do a lot of shit especially at this time, it was very clear they have fond memories of being together and doing all of these ridiculous challenges and tasks. Genuine fun was had, at least at times, and knowing that even more ridiculous things are up ahead gives me life.
I can’t remember anything about who wins the awards, but I’m sure it’s very cute and very hotly contested with Min “trophy hogger” Yoongi and Jung “Into Winning” Hoseok in the room. I do remember that the next episode ends with a tease for an iconic episode, so we are still swinging through gold here. See you all next time!
