Run BTS Rewatch Episode 29: Put On Your Sunday Best

I had completely forgotten about this episode until I started watching it, but as soon as it started I instantly recalled everything about it because it is wonderful from start to finish. Strap in everyone because this is going to be a long one.

Setup:

During a past dinner stream, Jimin said that he’d read a suggestion that if BTS entered the Billboard Top 100 that they should style each other, and everyone agreed, and then DNA charted so here they are to do as they promised - style each other perfectly. The trick is that they have to use clothes from their own closets to do it, because they didn’t yet have multiple fashion brand ambassadorships.

The Moments of Pure Love:

1. We start out in their dorm, where they’ve squeezed into a corner they’ve tried to clean but still has a bunch of shit stacked up behind them because they are seven people living in one place

2. Jin announces that he was going to give someone a full pink ensemble but has sadly thrown out his pink pants

   1. Jungkook quietly, to the universe, says anyone but Jin can be his stylist

3. Yoongi is planning to use his favorite pajamas, and he’s going to do his best and take it seriously; no one looks like they’re buying this

4. They’re all pretty sure Jungkook is going to give them a grey tracksuit to wear, which is basically his uniform, but he proudly says he bought some actual pants overseas

5. Namjoon says he has something he’s always wanted to wear but never had the chance to, which confounds them

6. Hoseok, delightedly, says he’s going to dress someone in his style, complete with the tiny pouch accessory that he’s currently wearing

   1. Yoongi claims people hate the pouch, and I’m going to need to have a chat with him because Hoseok’s many, many pouches are simply wonderful

7. Taehyung says he’s going to dress someone in a birthday gift he just got for Jin, to see how it fits, and there’s only one of it in the world because it’s custom-made

   1. Jin finds it hilarious that his gift is being used for content

8. Jimin is a little worried because the most compact out of the crew, and if he has to style Namjoon he’s going to look like he hulked out, but he’ll try his best

   1. Namjoon becomes even more concerned than he already was, but puts on a professional face and says this will be fun

9. I need to note that this was during the time that Namjoon was experimenting more with clothes and personal style because he’s wearing a blue soldier’s cap with a blue flannel and looks quite exciting

10. We get to actually see in the member’s closets in this episode which is WILD, I can’t even imagine them doing anything even close to this today, and we go room by room

11. It’s at this point we realize that they’re picking out these outfits before they know who they’re giving them to, which is even funnier than the base concept

12. Jungkook’s closet is first:

    1. It’s nearly entirely monochrome, white shirts hanging up on one side, black shirts on the other

    2. Jungkook finds the light camo pants he bought and he’s so excited by them he cackles like a witch from Macbeth

    3. He claims to like it when he has a whole ensemble, so he pulls out a matching jacket with military patches on the sleeves and continues to laugh and laugh and laugh

13. Taehyung’s closet comes next:

    1. It’s packed but neatly organized, full of a wide variety of colors and nearly all patterned

    2. Hoseok comes in with Jin for some commentary and exclaims that Taehyung’s fashion is getting more and more like a grandpa every day

    3. Taehyung shows off his collection of patterned ties, saying he has a tie that would suit every member; he holds up a mustard yellow tie with blue patterning and says it would be for Namjoon, then looks at the rest of his ties and say they’re actually all for Namjoon because everyone is very aware of how good Namjoon looks in a suit

    4. Taehyung then shows off the gift he got for Jin, which is a black coat with a purple and peacock green paisley lining; he models it over his silky blue spotted pajamas and looks incredible

14. Namjoon’s closet is our next stop:

    1. It is chaotic and also home to figurines instead of just clothes, but he zeroes in on a huge white knitted cardigan with a holly pattern around it that he says he never got a chance to wear

    2. He wants to style Jimin or Yoongi because he thinks it will help them be not so small; this is a pro-fashion tip for people who want to look huger from Namjoon

    3. He then grabs a pink fabric necklace from some random ass place and puts it on, but decides against using it

15. Now we turn to Yoongi and Jin’s shared closet:

    1. On Yoongi’s part, mostly what we can see are puffy coats and jackets all pushed up against each other, but he has a second row of button-ups

    2. Yoongi claims that someone has stolen all of his clothes, even though there is a huge amount of clothing in front of him

    3. Jin wanders through a forest of blazers and sleek shirts, as all of his clothing is simple but elegant

    4. He says he doesn’t have anything new but he will try to revolutionize fashion anyway as he pulls out a blue button up that he wore to the Billboards

    5. He’s going to pair it with sweatpants

    6. Yoongi’s still trying to figure out where all of his clothes have gone, and we have no resolution

16. Hoseok and Jimin also share a closet because they still share a room at this point:

    1. This closet is organized to within in inch of its life but is bursting full of clothing; Jimin’s side has a lot of classically lined clothes and solid colors, while Hoseok’s has more patterns and soft fabrics

    2. Hoseok enters the closet singing a little theme song for himself

    3. Jimin gives Hoseok an idea to use some of the clothes he’s currently wearing, and Hoseok is into it

    4. Jimin says he wants to style Taehyung because he has a birthday gift for him - another necktie!

    5. Hoseok finds a t-shirt that Jimin gave him that still has the tags on it that he can use, paired with his pouch, and he is convinced he has both the best outfit for this challenge and the best style in general

    6. Jimin starts singing and dancing to Best Of Me until he knocks into something; he apologizes and straightens it hurriedly

17. Namjoon is anticipating someone pulling off his amazing outfit, and he brings a belt because his pants might be big on some of them

18. Yoongi has found another place full of shirts, and ponders them silently

19. Jin has a track suit in hand to go with his button up shirt and he’s very proud of himself

20. Taehyung pre-ties the tie he’s giving out, considerately, and places it on a crisp white button-up

21. Yoonjin are first back, even though Yoongi never said a single thing about what he was picking or why

22. Jungkook still considers his choices, but he says he won’t dress someone in something he’s never actually worn; he still finds his jacket and pants fucking hilarious

23. Jin is back into the closet looking for something a little pinker to satisfy everyone’s expectations, and he has a lot to choose from

24. Hoseok shows off his outfit to Namjoon, proudly, and Namjoon thinks the pants are pants that he once threw out but he smiles fondly

25. Jungkook enters and causes a stir with his jacket

26. Jimin is still choosing, but is very excited about a pair of black overalls that he says is a power item

27. He decides to bring three outfits, one in case he gets Taehyung, one in case he gets someone small, and one in case he gets someone big

28. Jin lets everyone know they can look forward to his excellent selection, and when he leaves the room for a minute everyone is like “oh god please not him”

29. Taehyung has swapped the white button up and tie for a black turtleneck and beret and he feels happy with himself

30. Everyone is very impressed with Jimin’s intense preparation in bringing multiple outfits for multiple outcomes, but no one goes back to do the same

31. They go to the shooting studio and evaluate the offered clothes

    1. Yoongi’s pajamas still have the tag on, but he’s not ashamed

    2. Hoseok says Jin and Jungkook’s catch his eye, Jin’s because they are bright pink and Jungkook’s because of the camo

    3. Jimin wants to try out Jungkook’s style to see if he can do it

    4. Taehyung is busy being scandalized by Jin’s look of pink blazer over navy blue shorts, and Jin makes it even worse when he says they’ll be wearing those over other pants

    5. He claims that he was being considerate because some of the members don’t wear shorts, and Jimin didn’t have any leggings for him to steal, so this is the next best thing

    6. Hoseok is impressed that Jin even owns pink socks

32. To decide partners, everyone will go up one at a time and throw a rose backwards over their shoulder like a wedding bouquet at the rest of the members - whoever is closest to where the rose lands is styled by that person

33. Yoongi goes first, and Namjoon suddenly realizes that Yoongi’s clothes will never fit him, but Yoongi says it’s all going to be just fine

34. Everyone behind him starts fighting for different positions in line to try to avoid being chosen, especially VHope

35. The rose ends up midway between Hoseok and Jimin so they go again with just those two; Yoongi wills it to go to Jimin with a yelled spell, and it totally works

36. Jin asks if Yoongi just proposed to Jimin, and no one denies it

37. Everyone congratulates Jimin on avoiding Jin; Yoongi admits that he’s scared of Jin but he’s equally scared of Jungkook

38. On Jimin’s turn, he ends up with Jungkook, and Jungkook is satisfied with this outcome

39. Jungkook gets to go, and he does a little taunting dance up on the platform but most of them would still pick him over Jin so they’re trying to get the rose now

40. It ends up as a tie between Sope, with Yoongi the only one who really doesn’t want it, but when they go again alone it’s still ambiguous, so the production team decides to make Yoongi do it (probably twirling their mustaches off screen)

41. Hoseok says “hey, at least you didn’t get Jin” and Jin confronts him for this treachery, so Hoseok is forced to say that he would love to wear it via the power of an annoyed oldest hyung

42. Jin goes next, and everyone gets nervous, and Jin nails Hoseok in the head with it via the power of affront and is very pleased with himself

43. Hoseok is now pointing his qi towards Jin, and he also nails it via the magnetic power of spite

44. This leaves Taejoon each other’s partners, and they can both live with that after all of the prior drama

45. It’s time to preview the clothing for real!

    1. Jimin is confused about what to do because Jungkook is in between small and large, but he decides to go with the small because the style is very gay businessman with a pink button up and slacks and Jimin wants to see him in it

    2. Yoongi reveals his pajamas, which do not look like pajamas but instead a black suit blazer and pants, and he’s glad that Jimin is small like him so they’ll fit

    3. Jin claims he has a “coziness” concept because he has an astounding number of layers and shoes that are legitimately worn out from use

       1. Hoseok, somewhat horrified by everything that’s happening, razzes him, and Jin cheerfully admits that he was going to take out some of the items depending on who he got but Hoseok has been so disrespectful that now he has to wear all of them

    4. Jungkook proudly shows off his camo outfit, which Taehyung says reminds them of an old military concept they did

       1. Namjoon reveals that Jungkook doesn’t like it when his pants don’t match his top, and the rest of them nod agreement

       2. Yoongi says he doesn’t like camo patterns, and Jin quickly says it’s not camo, they are trees, so it’s artwork

    5. Hoseok shows off his t-shirt with a light-checked grey blazer over it, a pair of huge light blue jeans, an acorn pouch, a black bucket hat, a random pair of socks he pulled from the laundry basket, and sneakers that are large and heavy enough to be used as training weights; Jin is full of chagrin

    6. Namjoon introduces his outfit ominously by saying that he loves a fashion challenge but still never tried this out, then lifts up his massive, bulky cardigan and puts it on and looks like a hench polar bear; Taehyung, the man of a thousand French silks, is kind of scared

    7. Taehyung admits that he didn’t expect to get Namjoon so is outfit is slim-fitting, and the Taejoon “opposite aesthetics” storyline couldn’t have been more on the nose if they tried

       1. When he reminds them all that the coat is a gift for Jin, and Namjoon is modeling it, Jin makes such an exaggerated gasp of surprise that he nearly chokes on his own spit

       2. He also says that if he wears it to Music Bank the headline will be: Fashionista, the best boyfriend look, BTS Jin; this is probably correct

46. They put up a black screen with audio only lines as the guys all change together, and they have a lot of thoughts about each other as they do

    1. Jimin demands they opine on Jungkook, and Namseok thinks he looks pretty good, while Taehyung says it’s a boyfriend look

    2. Yoongi says Namjoon looks a bit unique, in a tone of voice that’s supportive but amused

    3. Hoseok asks Jin for styling tips around his collar, and Jin tells him to try to look as relaxed as possible

    4. Namkook exclaim that Hobi looks great in Jin’s insane outfit

    5. Namjoon tries to say that Taehyung looks good and Jin agrees, but Yoongi quickly says he basically looks like he’s wearing Namjoon’s clothes

    6. Koobi relate that Jin is looking great in his new outfit

    7. Jungkook instructs Yoongi to roll up his pants, which made me laugh a lot

47. The all appear back out in the studio wearing shapeless black robes like they’re doing some kind of religious ritual

48. Namjoon presses Hoseok for some spoilers about his outfit, and Hoseok says that he likes it, and it’s beyond imagination, and his socks are tucked into his pants, which they agree is quite tantalizing

49. Jimin goes first, and as he’s wearing what amounts to a stretchy skin-tight black suit with a tucked-in Saint Laurent black t-shirt, studded belt. and black loafers, he looks like a million goddamn dollars

    1. He’s also blonde right now, so that levels him up even higher

    2. Yoongi is slightly put out that Jimin left the tag on, but Jimin is like “these are your clothes???? I can’t just take the tag off”

    3. Jimin says it’s not a style he usually wears, and he’s probably right off the stage, but we all know what he looks like on stage and it’s very good

50. Jungkook steps up to the platform, grinning like the Joker in terror, then rips off his robe and emerges with a huge smile looking exactly like Park Jimin in a pink striped button-up layered over a grey striped button-up (or possibly they’re connected shirts designed to layer), black form fitting pants, and black laced shoes

    1. Namjoon encourages him to do the patented Jimin hair push-back, and he does without hesitation

    2. When they ask him to pose he looks straight at the camera and smiles like it’s a school picture

    3. He says he feels good in the outfit but he gets down very quickly

51. Yoongi is tapped next, and he looks like an extra in Top Gun with a gray beanie, the camo military jacket and pants, a black t-shirt, stompy boots, and a simple belt; as he’s also in the fading end of Mint Yoongi era, he really looks color-coordinated from head to toe

    1. Everyone laughs at the vibe, especially as he starts doing military poses and fashion spins

    2. They say he’s ready for a movie and he says he’s ready for a safari

52. Namjoon steps up, black beret already visible, then reveals his black turtleneck, black loose-fitting slacks, black socks with sandals, black jacket with purple paisley combo, and because he is approximately ten feet tall and all leg he looks incredible

    1. They all agree that he looks great, if a little bit like he’s wearing someone’s grandma’s coat

    2. Hoseok examines the feet and realizes that they’re not black dress shoes but are shower sandals with black socks creating an illusion of whole shoe, which is extremely Taehyung

    3. Jimin says he looks like an artist or painter, which is accurate

    4. When Namjoon takes of the jacket to show that he could reverse it to be all purple, but not only does it not look as good he totally rips his mic off when he does it and Jimin laughs at him in fond disbelief

    5. It’s important note that when Namjoon takes the jacket off and is just wearing a tight black turtleneck with his flared black pants like a fashion model I nearly passed out

53. Taehyung is introduced by Yoongi as wearing a sweater that makes it look like you’ve worked out for twenty years, and when it’s revealed there is no better way to describe it; Taehyung is essentially lost inside of a white cloud that makes him three times his usual size

    1. He also has a jean jacket underneath, a denim beret, loose cargo pants, and semi-Timberlands, but no one can see anything but this sweater

    2. Jimin comes up to feel his arms for new muscles

    3. Everyone is somewhat interested in seeing Taehyung without slacks, as that’s all he wears

54. Jin steps up with Hoseok rapid-fire delivering instructions on how to properly pose, and he drops the robe to show everything Hoseok laid out before, and of course he is Jin so he looks hot but he also has the bucket hat so low over his eyes that you can pretty much only see his mouth

    1. Namjoon is enthralled by the way the pouch matches the shoes, and asks what Hoseok carries in it

    2. Hoseok proudly reveals that it’s good for carrying his credit / transit cards and lip balm

    3. They all agree, including Jin, that he looks like a truly fashionable person now

    4. The bucket hat has a safety pin in and that’s a blast from the past I never thought I’d experience

55. Hoseok is the grand finale, and he says he’s more nervous than he was even at the Billboards

56. Jimin says that everything they’ve seen up until now had nothing to do with fashion, but this will be true fashion at its heart

57. Yoongi agrees that this is the future of the Korean fashion industry

58. Hoseok drops his robe, so let’s get into it

    1. Mirrored pink sunglasses

    2. A hot pink silky button up shirt with black patterns running over it

    3. Over that, a lighter pink, vaguely-denim jacket, unbottoned

    4. Over that, an even lighter massive pink blazer, draped over his shoulders but his arms not through the sleeves

    5. A pink and white sweater tied around his waist

    6. Navy blue athletic shorts

    7. Under that, black nylon capris that hit him mid-calf

    8. Pink socks pulled up to the mid-calf so the capris can be tucked in on the right side only

    9. Pale pink sneakers with white accents

    10. Hoseok also has burgundy hair which matches the blazer almost perfectly

    11. Only Jung Hoseok could make this work even a little, and he does it by being both very hot and very confident in his body as he strikes model poses; he also uses his skill with sunglasses to great effect

59. The rest of Bangtan clap for him in awe, saying that Jin’s look is amazing and Hoseok is amazing wearing it

60. Namjoon is hung up on the fact that by layering the shorts over the capris it looks like it’s just a single pair of pants with multi-colored zones and I think he kind of wishes they existed so he could get some

61. Hoseok shrugs off the blazer to reveal that he’s tucked everything else into the sweater he’s tied around his waist for stability, and because he has such a slim waist it actually looks pretty good

62. Jin admires it briefly but then is like “don’t step on my coat”

63. After Hoseok puts it on Jin once again reminds us that this is a cozy concept, and he makes Hoseok agree that it’s both cozy and warm several times through gritted teeth before he will let him down from the platform

64. Yoongi says he wants to see Jungkook go out in the camo outfit he made him wear, like this would be some great dare, and the rest of them are like “he wears that in public constantly already”

65. Hoseok is distracted by how enormous Taehyung looks, and Jungkook takes another look and giggles his highest, airiest giggle

66. Yoongi says that Taehyung is the shape of an air fighter jet

67. Hoseok says Namjoon has to wear it out for real sometime, and he agrees (if he ever did please tell me in the comments, I don’t remember)

68. Hoseok then says everyone should have to wear the clothes they styled the others in someday, staring directly at Jin’s face, and Jin is like “haha no fucking way”

69. They then do a full runway walk, one at a time, with the following vibe

    1. Jimin - is a model, does model poses that could also be poses from an anime, has perfect proportions and body control, could walk any runway at any moment no problem

    2. Jungkook - is Park Jimin, does Park Jimin gestures, does Park Jimin dances, tilts his head back Park Jiminly, is amused by himself

    3. Yoongi - is military Ken, spins about face multiple times, does a dumb little dance to displace his weird energy into the air, is trying his best

    4. Namjoon - is gigantic, is perfectly proportioned, is tall enough to be a real model, is super weird and does poses like sniffing at his wrist like he’s testing cologne samples and while trying to hold onto a live bird

    5. Taehyung - is larger than he has ever been, makes creepy smile faces, does deep squat poses that are fashionable except for the creepy faces, in general could be a model if you could find him inside the sweater

    6. Jin - is uncomfortable with the attention, never shows his eyeballs at lal, does a moonwalk for no reason, gets yelled at by Hoseok to pose well, finally has to do his own weird dance just to get through this agony of perception

    7. Hoseok - is serving face at all times, moves his body like a fashion machine, does a lot of things that show off his neck, the only part of him that’s not covered in fabric, could also walk any runway if given appropriate prep time

70. They all pose for us in a line at the end in their best fashion week imitation, Taehyung really getting into it, until they all realize they don’t know how to stop this nightmare and start laughing at each other

71. Hoseok tries to lead them off stage with a promise that Run BTS will continue later, but the production staff hasn’t stopped the music so they end up back out on the runway carpet dancing like total nerds until none of us can take it anymore

The Finish Line:

I remember watching this episode a long time ago and being absolutely enchanted with everything and everyone in it. While they’re all different people, it didn’t become clear to me HOW different they are until this one, when we get a glimpse into their closets and their aesthetics. The Taejoon dichotomy is one that may never be solved in our lifetime, though Namjoon is into a simpler aesthetic these days, and 2seok’s little war with each other was both surprising and very funny.

Of course they’re all some of the most handsome men in the world, so they look great 24/7/365, but it was also really interesting now to see who was comfortable with fashion and who wasn’t, and what that would ultimately mean for their brand ambassadorships. Taehyung in particular has been aiming fashionward for a really long time and I’m glad he got to achieve his dream of being very hot in very hot clothes for salary.

This is one of the more-watched episodes in the 2017 Run BTS playlist, but we’re about to hit another infamous duology, the one where they make everyone sleep in the studio and try to sing a song about a tomato. Come back next week for some true exhaustion!
